TONY Romo gave his thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys’ surprise head coaching hire of Brian Schottenheimer this offseason.

The Cowboys’ legendary quarterback spoke about the new head coach, Schottenheimer, who has replaced veteran Mike McCarthy.

After a disappointing 7-10 campaign, the Cowboys chose not to retain McCarthy after five seasons as the team’s head coach.

McCarthy was 1-3 in the playoffs during his tenure, and the Cowboys elected to hire Schottenheimer, who was the franchise’s offensive coordinator in 2023 and 2024, as the next man up.

The move was a stunner to many, but the team opted to go in-house with their hire.

The U.S. Sun caught up with Tony Romo, who believes in Jerry Jones and the rest of the Cowboys’ front office’s thought process in hiring Schottenheimer.

“I don’t think Jerry, Stephen, Jerry Jr., and Charlotte ever do anything without having a well-thought-out plan,” Romo said.

Romo noted that Schottenheimer has great football acumen thanks to being the son of the late, great Hall of Fame coach Marty Schottenheimer.

“I feel like no one knows [about a coach] until they’ve been in the building around somebody consistently, and Brian comes from a football family,” the 45-year-old CBS broadcaster said.

“We all know about his dad, who was an incredible football coach.

“Brian has been a great football coach throughout his time in the NFL, and anyone who’s been around him knows he’s a great teacher.”

“The starting point for being a good coach is, can you teach and get people to learn and improve?”

“And he’s done that every step of the way everywhere he’s been.”

Among Schottenheimer’s accomplishments as a coach are helping Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson put together career-best seasons and helping the 2023 Cowboys finish as a top-five offense.

But it’s Schottenheimer’s first time as a head coach, and he’s 51 years old, as other Cowboys coach targets included Kellen Moore, who was the team’s offensive coordinator for four seasons, helping the franchise lead the league in two of those years.

The Cowboys instead hired Shottenheimer and saw Moore, who just helped the Philadelphia Eagles win a Super Bowl as an offensive coordinator, become the New Orleans Saints‘ head coach.

Nonetheless, Romo thinks Schottenheimer’s familiarity will be helpful for the Cowboys in 2025.

“You know, it may not have been the flashiest hiring, but I will say he’s been in that building and so everyone around has been able to evaluate him and the way that he communicates to the players … to other coaches, the front office, all of that matters,” Romo said.

“When you hire a coach who’s in the building, you know everything about him and you know what his strengths and weaknesses are, and so they saw a lot of positive things that he did that are going to affect the team, coaches, front office, and the entire building.

The Cowboys won’t find it hard to adjust to their new head coach, and Romo thinks that will play a beneficial role in getting back to the playoffs.

“I think the positive will be that the terminology will stay the same because that always takes time to learn, and he knows the players and so you’re able to make decisions faster instead of someone coming in to evaluate everything.

“Now, all of a sudden, he already has that evaluation done, and you can hit the ground running right when he starts.”

Schottenheimer oversaw his first NFL Draft last week and helped the Cowboys make nine selections, which included first-round pick offensive lineman Tyler Booker.

Romo told The U.S. Sun that he “loved” the pick in Booker and believes the Cowboys potentially landed four to five opening-day rookie starters.
