‘It got ridiculous’ – Referee intervened before Gerwyn Price was handed unprecedented fine ...Middle East

Gerwyn Price was handed a £21,500 fine and suspended from darts for three months for his behaviour in a 2018 tournament.

The Welshman‘s first ever PDC major win at the Grand Slam of Darts was marred by incidents during his quarter-final clash with Simon Whitlock, and in the final against Gary Anderson.

In a fiery last eight encounter, Price edged Whitlock in a 16-15 victory which went down to a deciding leg.

But it was the Ice Man’s antics earlier in the match which landed him in trouble, who celebrated wildly after coming back from 9-5 down to level things at 10-10.

His actions sparked bickering between the two players, as referee Russ Bray was forced to tell Price to calm down.

And after advancing past Whitlock, and then Mensur Suljovic in the semi-finals, the Welsh star had even more up his sleeve in an ill-tempered final showdown with Anderson.

Price found himself 9-12 down against the Scot in the decider, before battling back to win 16-13, claiming eight of the last 10 legs.

This wasn’t without some underhand tactics, with the pair clashing in the 15th and 28th legs over what Anderson viewed as slow play and more over-the-top celebrations by Price.

At one stage in the match, the current world number 11’s behaviour was so extreme that his opponent responded by shoving him.

The heated encounter certainly left many unimpressed, including iconic darts commentator Wayne Mardle, who condemned their antics.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Mardle said: “It was brewing. It got beyond a darts match. It got ridiculous in the end.

“You shouldn’t be touching other players. You shouldn’t be backing in, pushing. Gerwyn Price pushes the buttons of other players – that is a fact.”

Meanwhile Price insisted Anderson needed to handle his dark arts better, saying after his win: “He can’t handle playing me.

“He just moans every time that I’m doing this, doing that. Concentrate on your own game.

“I’m throwing my darts. He needs to wait for his turn, hold back. He doesn’t like it with a little bit up him.”

But Price’s actions later caught up with him, as he was then handed a trio of fines for his final conduct by the Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) two months later in January 2019.

He was found to have brought the sport into disrepute in a hearing, after he and Anderson were referred to the authority.

Price was fined £8,000 for his behaviour against Whitlock, £12,000 for his behaviour in the final and £1,500 for his social media posts after the clash, while Anderson received a formal warning.

The huge figure represented the biggest fine in darts history, while he was also hit with a three-month suspended ban.

According to the DRA, Price’s behaviour “drew an unprecedented number of complaints from members of the public”.

But the 40-year-old refused to accept his punishment lying down, vowing to appeal against the hefty sum of money.

Price told BBC Sport Wales: “I don’t think I deserve any fine at all.

“I did nothing different to any other game since day one and my game has not changed thereafter.

“I want to get my name clear, even if they want to fine me £1,000, I will continue to fight it.”

While he was unable to completely clear his name, Price managed to reduce his fine to a total of £11,500 after a successful appeal.

Both of his sanctions for his behaviour against Whitlock and Anderson were halved, with only the fine for his social media posts remaining at the full amount.

And Price and Anderson weren’t done with each other at the oche either, as they later met in the final of the 2021 PDC World Darts Championship.

It was once again the Welshman who emerged victorious, as he claimed his first and only world title with a 7-3 win over the two-time champion at Alexandra Palace.
