Tatis, back in lineup despite bruised arm, sparks Padres to 2-1 victory ...Middle East

News by : (Times of San Diego) -

Fernando Tatis Jr. sprinted home on a wild pitch by Pittsburgh closer David Bednar in the top of the ninth inning Saturday to lift the Padres to a 2-1 win at rainy PNC Park.

Tatis, who exited Friday’s win in the third inning after taking a 93-mph pitch off his left forearm, was cleared to play after the swelling from his contusion dissipated.

He led off the ninth with a double and stole third, then took off when a pitch from Bednar (0-3) to Xander Bogaerts skipped in front of catcher Joey Bart. The ball squirted to the right and Tatis’ slide just beat Bart’s lunging tag to give the Padres their fourth straight victory.

Manager Mike Shildt called Tatis “pretty much a one-man show, right?” and said the sequence in the ninth represented “just one of the better baseball plays you’re going to see.

“Just great competition coupled with special talent,” Shildt said.

The Friars scored their first run when Manny Machado hit his third homer of the season, one of just three hits for the team.

Jason Adam (3-0) worked a perfect eighth. Robert Suarez earned his 13th save, though he walked Oneil Cruz with one out in the ninth. Bryan Reynolds, though, lined out to Bogaerts at short and Bogaerts doubled off Cruz at first to end it.

Pirates starter Bailey Falter dominated the Padres for seven innings. The left-hander limited San Diego to two hits and at one point retired 11 straight before Machado’s blast over the left field wall with one out in the seventh.

Cruz had singled home Alexander Canario for Pittsburgh’s only run.

The Pirates had the bases loaded against Padres starter Randy Vasquez in the fifth only for Canario — who came in batting .118 — to strike out.

Vasquez labored in his five innings of work. Cruz walked four times, and overall, Pittsburgh left 10 runners on base during the starter’s stint while not failing to record an extra-base hit. The Pirates have lost six of seven.

Meanwhile, the Friars called up catcher Luis Campasano from Triple-A El Paso and sent down Poway native Connor Joe in hopes that Joe can get more regular at-bats.

The series wraps up on Sunday when Stephen Kolek makes his first career start against Pirates left-hander Andrew Heaney (2-2, 2.50 ERA). Then they head to New York to face the Yankees.
