Thousands took a stroll at Saturday’s Walk for Animals in Point Loma, raising over $300,000 for the San Diego Humane Society, an official said.

More than 4,000 people, many with their dogs, turned out for the 31st annual event, held at Liberty Station.

Spokeswoman Nina Thompson said the day had “such a fun mix of attendees,” and the money that was raised will help the organization care for 40,000 animals in the coming year.

She also noted that two dogs up for adoption, Carson and Nala, “had the best time, meeting people and other dogs” during the fundraiser.

Walk for Animals is considered one of the Humane Society’s largest events, with a targeted goal of raising $335,000 this year.

“This is the kickoff really to the busiest time of the year,” said Gary Weitzman, president and CEO. “All of our animals feel like they come in in the summer. We are packed to the gills. We really want to let the world know where here to celebrate this relationship we have with these incredible creatures. But we also want people to come in and adopt and foster, volunteer … just be part of the community that’s taking care of these incredible animals with us.”

Along with a two-mile and half-mile walk, Saturday’s event featured dog activities and a spa, live music and vendor booths.
