No. 5 overall seed UNC swept its way past VCU and South Carolina at the Chewning Tennis Center during the weekend to advance to the NCAA Tournament super regionals next weekend.

The action got underway Friday afternoon, with the Tar Heels taking the court against the Rams after South Carolina had defeated Kansas in the day’s first match. UNC took a quick lead by clinching the doubles point in dominant fashion, with 6-1 victories on No. 2 and No. 3 court.

Inclement weather would force a delay of nearly two hours, but UNC’s momentum didn’t let up in singles. Thea Rabman defeated VCU’s Mariam Ibrahim 6-4, 6-1 on No. 3 court and Claire Hill beat Sara Alba 6-1, 6-3 on No. 6, putting the Tar Heels a point a way from victory. Reese Brantmeier then won the clincher on No. 1 court, ousting the Rams’ Sofia Thorne 6-3, 6-3.

The Tar Heels were equally dominant the next day against the Gamecocks, once again winning the doubles point without dropping a set. It’s the 28th time in 29 matches during the spring season that UNC has won the doubles point.

Alanis Hamilton would shut out South Carolina’s Misa Malkin to begin singles, defeating Malkin 6-0, 6-0 on No. 4 court to give UNC another quick point. Rabman won in straight sets on No. 3 and Hill did so on No. 6, finishing off yet another 4-0 sweep for the Tar Heels.

UNC is now 25-4 overall this season and has won 10 matches in a row. The Tar Heels will be back at the Chewning Tennis Center for the super regionals next weekend, when Carolina will host No. 12 overall seed NC State. The winner will advance to the NCAA Championship in Waco, TX. UNC has beaten the Wolfpack twice this season.
