Martin Brundle has taken on them all during his iconic grid walks, but it turns out the final level boss is the duo of the Williams sisters.
The former McLaren driver has become part of the Formula 1 furniture since his retirement, with his grid walks a staple of every weekend’s race.
Brundle is adored by F1 fans for his grid walksGetty And in Miami stumbled across his toughest challengeSky F1Over the years he’s battled names like Kylian Mbappe, Cara Delevingne, and perhaps most famously Megan Thee Stallion, whose security he shut down in brutal fashion.
Yet no one sends shivers down his spine quite like Serena and Venus Williams, who have been regular F1 attendees in recent years, particularly at the Miami Grand Prix.
Friends of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, the pair of tennis legends are undoubtedly sporting royalty, with Serena considered by some as the greatest female athlete of all time.
With that comes the best security in the game, but even Brundle found a way past them at the 2022 race in Miami.
Having been scored on numerous occasions by the Williams sisters in the past, Brundle was understandably nervy when he saw the legendary duo on the grid.
“I don’t know if I can stand the rejection if I’m honest,” he said. “But I’ll do this for you…”
The 65-year-old then jinked his way past some defenders like peak Lionel Messi and was right on Venus’ doorstep, giving her no other option but to speak.
“Martin Brundle Sky, how are you Venus, good to see you on the grid again, are you cheering for Lewis?” he said.
He was suddenly interrupted by DJ Khaled, but managed to stick on Venus as the security focused on Serena.
“So tell me, what do you think of this event in Miami?” he said, before getting the response he’d long craved for.
It looked like his chance was overSky F1 But Brundle hung in and got the interview he’d long desiredSky F1 Not before forgetting to speak in sheer disbeliefSky F1“Well we love having Lewis and all the drivers in Miami so… wishing them luck it’s the first time…”
Brundle just stared at the seven-time Grand Slam winner in disbelief he’d finally got his interview, and she awkwardly looked back at him thinking she’d missed something.
“Oh… what’s the question?” she said to the startled Brit.
“It doesn’t really matter,” he said with a chuckle. “But it’s just good to hear from you, nice to talk to you actually!
“That was a nice surprise, normally I get a very very cold shoulder on that one.”
A year later the Florida residents were back on the grid, but Brundle made sure not to take his chances again.
“What’s going on in here, there’s got to be some megas in here,” he said before realising. “It’s one of the Williams sisters!
“But I don’t think I could stand the rejection of being told no for an interview with them for the umpteenth time so I think I’ve learned my lesson on that one.”
Fear not Williams security, you’re safe for the 2025 race…
