No Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025? Asian Cricket Council could be disbanded, says Sunil Gavaskar ...Middle East

Sports and politics shouldn’t mix. That’s what many state. Well, it’s not always possible. And that’s exactly what’s going on with the Asia Cup 2025. It’s the biggest cricket tournament event barring the International Cricket Council (ICC) events. But due to the political tension between India and Pakistan, its present and future aren’t certain.

No Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025?

Reports suggest that the Indian government may command the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to not play against the Pakistan cricket team. Due to this, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar thinks that Pakistan won’t be part of the tournament in coming September.

“BCCI’s stance has always been what the government of India tells them to do. So I don’t think it would be any different when it comes to the Asia Cup. India and Sri Lanka are the hosts for this particular edition of the Asia Cup, so it depends on whether things have changed at all, but if things haven’t changed, I can’t see Pakistan now being part of the Asia Cup, which is going to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.

ACC could be disbanded

For the unaware, the Asia Cup was created in 1983. Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, and Sri Lanka came together to form the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in 1983. And in 1984, the first edition of the Asia Cup was played. It was built to create Asia’s very own World Cup, and it’s still a success. But the ACC might be disbanded, and the Asia Cup as we know it might be as well.

“I don’t know how it will be. It might be that the Asian Cricket Council could well be disbanded, and you could just have a three-nation tour that could well have a three-nation tournament or a four-nation tournament with maybe Hong Kong or the UAE being invited. So that could well happen; the Asian Cricket Council could well be disbanded. But I think it is dependent on what happens in the next couple of months,” he added.

The 2025 edition of the Asia Cup is set to be an 8-team tournament. And Gavaskar suggests that Pakistan will be removed, perhaps. Since the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and BCCI made an agreement to play only at neutral events, hosting it in India won’t be a problem now either.

“It could well happen that India decides to pull out of the Asian Cricket Council. We can say we’re going to have a 4-nation tournament or a 5-nation tournament in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, and it could be, it could well be that if the tournament is held in Bangladesh, the tournament is held in Sri Lanka, but obviously India is going to be the host, then India will host it in India,” Gavaskar added.

“I won’t be surprised at all if the Asian Cricket Council gets disbanded with what’s been happening. I mean, if you’ve got two countries, you know, fighting against each other, then it’s, it’s a little bit difficult to, to play sport with each other,” he concluded.
