Darts is the king of fun and games – but in the heat of elite competition, it is not always well received.
Just ask Justin Pipe, who went crazy when celebrating his win over Kevin Painter in 2012, leading to a furious reaction from his opponent.
Pipe has a reputation for showmanship Painter was left waiting for the post-match handshake and was angered by Pipe’s anticsPipe faced Painter in the last-16 of the World Grand Prix and earned a 3-2 victory to book a quarter-final spot.
Upon winning the contest, Pipe didn’t hold back in his celebrations as he gave one of the most energetic sequences ever witnessed by a darts audience.
Jumping up and down on the spot, he showcased his boxing skills with a shadow boxing jab and cross-hook combo.
Pipe was a boxer in his youth but he put down the gloves to focus on darts.
After a few seconds, Pipe went to shake the hand of his opponent, but was greeted with a hostile reaction.
Painter tapped him on the head and Pipe pushed his hand away, calling him a ‘c***’.
The crowd began to boo Painter as he walked away in frustration.
He resumed his celebrations jumping from his legs to hands in a handstand like motion, finishing off the move with another boxing combination.
After a 25-year career, Painter announced his retirement from darts following failure to regain his tour card in 2021.
He will forever be remembered for an epic World Championship final defeat to Phil Taylor in 2004, which is considered one of the greatest darts matches ever.
Pipe was too happy to carePipe, meanwhile, paved the way for darts to become a much more mainstream entertainment thanks to stars such as Luke Littler.
The 18-year-old recorded a fifth Premier League nightly win of the season in Birmingham as he defeated Michael van Gerwen in the final..
Littler beat van Gerwen 6-4 on Night 13 and sits on top of the standings with 35 points – nine points ahead of world number one Luke Humphries.
Speaking after his final victory, Littler told Sky Sports: “I’m very happy.
“Obviously, the fifth win, it was going to come at some point, but it’s been a few weeks since I actually won my first game.
“So once I got over the finish line against Steve, I was confident and then I got away with it a bit against Nathan, but then it was a bit of a rollercoaster.
“A cracking game [vs Van Gerwen]. I’ve always thought in my head, the first semi-final of the O2, it’s so crucial because there’s not that big of a turnaround.
“To win this tonight, I’m nine points away from Luke [Humphries], so I’m very happy at the minute, and I’m very confident that I’ll stay at the top of the table.
“It’s getting a bit nitty-gritty at four and five with Nathan and Michael [Van Gerwen], so obviously I’ve done Nathan a bit of a favour there by winning this one.
“It’s going to be a good few weeks watching those guys fight for top four whilst I’m cruising at the top.”
