A five-member student team from North Hollywood High School in San Fernando Valley won 3rd place at the National Science Bowl competition held in Washington, D.C. on April 28 and sponsored by the Department of Energy. The five students faced more than 65 top-notch high school teams from throughout the U.S.
Students Connor Chang, Mingao Guo, Charles Huang, Suzuko Ohshima, and Connor Zhao took on the nation’s best high schools after winning the local competition in March that was open to public, private, and parochial schools within the boundaries of Los Angeles Unified School District.

(Photo by Joshua Lawton, National Science Bowl, Department of Energy, Office of Science) ExpandOn Friday, Xavier Chavez, assistant principal at North Hollywood High School, said the students on the team are part of the highly gifted magnet program at the school. “We’re extremely proud of their success,” he said. “We know this is a young team full of underclassmen, so we’re excited about their future (at National Science Bowl) next year.”
Officials at L.A. Department of Water and Power, who sponsored the earlier local Regional Science Bowl on March 8 involving about 40 high school teams, said in a statement that the team showed, “extraordinary scientific knowledge and teamwork against more than 65 high school regional teams from across the country.”
