Tennessee lands transfer defensive back with SEC experience ...Middle East

On Friday, Tennessee added to its secondary with a transfer commitment from former Colorado cornerback Colton Hood.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound defensive back will join the Volunteers with 3 seasons of eligibility remaining. He played in all 13 games last fall for the Buffaloes. Hood began his career at Auburn in 2023, where he appeared in 4 games while preserving his redshirt.

Hood was on a visit to Knoxville just 1 day prior to his announcement. He also received interest from Miami and Notre Dame, among others, since entering the portal last week.

Hood made the first start of his career last season in a game against Arizona. He matched up with Tetairoa McMillan, the eighth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, that day and allowed 1 reception for 10 yards. He was targeted 5 times total that day, and gave up 3 receptions for 38 yards. He also had an interception.

In total, Hood recorded 24 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 6 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions last season. He also returned 4 kickoffs for the Buffs. Hood finished the season with a 68.8 defensive grade and a 70.4 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus. He played in the slot some, but spent most of his time as an outside corner.

Hood was a 4-star prospect out of Georgia when he signed with Auburn in the 2023 class. He did not have an offer from Tennessee when coming out of high school, but Josh Heupel and Co. got involved this time around and wasted little time in his recruitment.

The Vols now hold 7 known transfer pledges this offseason. Hood is the first defensive back to transfer into the program. Tennessee did, however, sign 4 new freshmen to the roster this offseason.

Last year’s starters, Jermod McCoy and Rickey Gibson III, are back, but an ACL tear in January put McCoy on the shelf for an extended period of time. The injury made corner an immediate priority for Tennessee in the spring window and opened the door for someone new to fill McCoy’s spot until he gets back to 100%. Hood provides Heupel with an experienced option in that regard.
