The man who fell more than 20 feet over the Clemente Wall onto the right-field warning track at PNC Park on Wednesday has been identified as Kavan Markwood, according to a report from TribLive.
Markwood remains in critical condition after falling over a railing during Wednesday night’s MLB game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. According to reports, Markwood suffered a skull fracture as a result of his fall. Pittsburgh said in a statement on Wednesday night that he was transported to Allegheny General Hospital.
The 20-year-old is a former college football player. He played linebacker at Walsh University and Wheeling University, a pair of Division II schools in Ohio and West Virginia, respectively.
Markwood’s fall happened in the seventh inning after Pirates right fielder Andrew McCutchen hit a 2-run double to give Pittsburgh a 4-3 lead.
“Truly hate what happened tonight,” McCutchen posted on X late Wednesday. “Can’t help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I pray tonight for him. Let us think about his loved ones and hug our families a little tighter tonight. I hope he pulls thru (sic.). May God Bless you all. Good night.”
Pirates chairman Bob Nutting also released a statement Thursday morning.
“We are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken after the terrible accident that occurred last night,” Nutting said. “It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced. We are devastated. Pirates baseball is a community, and our fans are like family. In times like these, we must come together, support one another and keep him and his loved ones in our prayers.”
