BREAD sold in six states has been recalled after it was found to contain shards of glass that could slice through mouths and throats.

The US Food and Drug Administration issued an urgent warning after discovering glass fragments in the rolls.

The recall affects products distributed in Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Ohio.

Upper Crust Bakery LP, a Maryland-based manufacturer, makes the bread that was found to have glass fragments on top.

According to the FDA, the rolls were sold at the retail level and pose a serious choking and injury risk.

The fragments could cause mouth and throat lacerations, damaged teeth, or even perforate the intestines, the FDA said.

The recall has been labeled a Class II, which means the contaminated products could lead to temporary or reversible health problems.

The agency said it’s less severe than a Class I recall, which typically involves products that cause serious or life-threatening health effects.

At least 818 cases of bread are believed to be affected, including 699 cases of the 18-ounce Multigrain Sourdough rolls.

Another 89 cases of Ancient Grains Hoagie Rolls and 30 cases of Whole Grain Multigrain rolls were also recalled.

The bread types were packaged in corrugated paper cartons and sold frozen.

Upper Crust Bakery first alerted the FDA about the issue on April 12.

It remains unclear how the glass ended up in the packaging.

No injuries or illnesses have been reported so far but a study in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy found that sharp objects, such as glass, are up to 15% more likely to puncture the stomach or intestines compared to blunt items.

The FDA urged consumers not to eat the rolls and to dispose of them safely or return them for a full refund.

Shoppers and retailers should double-check their inventory for the listed lot numbers.

The agency also advised businesses not to serve, sell, or use any of the affected products.

A recall over glass contamination in bread is highly unusual, with only one other similar case reported in the past three years.

In 2022, Fetting’s Frozen Foods LLC pulled its Abby’s Bakery Homestyle White Bread Dough from shelves due to the risk of glass pieces.

The Upper Crust Bakery recall comes days after another warning was issued over a popular snack sold at Costco.

The snacks were recalled over the risk that they might contain wood chips.

And pork sold at Aldi was recalled over fears it was contaminated by metal fragments.
