On average, OWASA treats 7.5 million gallons of our community’s wastewater per day – and roughly about 3 billion gallons per year at the Mason Farm Wastewater Treatment Plant.
OWASA maintains roughly 350 miles of wastewater pipes across the community (the “wastewater collection system” and treats the wastewater at the plant. Some water is diverted to UNC to be used as reclaimed water for irrigation, toilet flushing, and running large chillers that air condition buildings.
The treated wastewater that is left is discharged into Morgan Creek. Morgan Creek eventually makes its way to Jordan Lake.
In calendar year 2024, OWASA met or surpassed all state and federal regulations regarding wastewater treatment. Details of water quality, treatment, progress, and data tying directly into OWASA’s operations in keeping our community thriving can all be found in the annual post on OWASA’s website!
