DALLAS Cowboys icon Tony Romo knows a thing or two about sliding in the NFL Draft, and he thinks quarterback Shedeur Sanders should focus on only what he can control moving forward.
Romo was an undrafted free agent before his legendary Dallas Cowboys career, and the 45-year-old weighed in on Sanders‘ falling to the Browns in the fifth round of last week’s 2025 NFL Draft.

Five quarterbacks were drafted before Sanders, including his new Browns teammate, third-round pick Dillon Gabriel, and Tennessee Titans’ No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, as multiple reports pointed to the 23-year-old’s pre-draft interviews as to why he dropped.
While the son of Deion Sanders suffered one of the most stunning slides in NFL draft history, the retired four-time Pro Bowler Tony Romo knows the feeling of not hearing your name called and then some.
Romo wasn’t picked in the 2003 NFL Draft and signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent before finally making his mark in his fourth season with the team.
Coming from experience, the 45-year-old Romo spoke to The U.S. Sun and sent a message to Sanders to take this opportunity that the Browns, who traded up with the Seattle Seahawks for his services, has given him.
“I think the biggest thing (is), it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish,” Romo said in an exclusive interview thanks to his new Skechers Hands Free Slip-ins campaign.
“You’ve got to remember I was undrafted (and) as an undrafted player, I know the work starts when you get there at another level, and it’s a great opportunity.
“It’s a privilege to be drafted at all, even for me as an undrafted guy, it was a privilege to have some team want you to come in and compete.
“(Sanders) has got a great opportunity in front of him. He had a stellar career, and he’s a great player.”
“… (But), I thought I was going to be drafted, and each round that goes by, it’s hard.
“(Life) resets whenever you get drafted, and that’s what happens now.”
Romo took over for Drew Bledsoe in Week 8 of the 2006 campaign and never looked back for eight-plus seasons, earning four Pro Bowl nods during that span.
Sanders will be entering a Browns squad that has four other quarterbacks, including 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel, on its roster.
It wasn’t easy for Romo, who didn’t throw a single pass in game action until his fourth season.
The hope is that Sanders will throw a pass in the NFL much earlier than Romo, but he will have to grind it out, just like any successful quarterback has done in the history of time.

“And when your opportunity presents itself, take advantage of your opportunity.
“I think he and Dillon (Gabriel) are in a good situation because if a team drafts you, that means they like you.
“They’re not drafting guys they don’t like, and that’s the one area that sometimes people miss the mark on a little is that it means that they saw something in you that’s positive and that they want you to be a part of the organization.
Romo believes that Sanders should look to improve in areas on the football field as he joins a Browns franchise that is always looking for its next franchise quarterback.
“I think for [Sanders], it’s just to maximize his opportunities and to improve daily and I think you’ll find real quick right when you get to the NFL, you’ll find what you have to improve upon and you try to make your weaknesses and capitalize on your strengths when they’re there,” Romo said.

He will look to build off his collegiate campaign in which he posted 4,134 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
