How to prepare for a blackout

In preparation for a power cut, official advice is that people should:

Keep a battery or wind-up torch at home and, if possible, avoid using a mobile phone torch to conserve battery. It also advises against using candles or any other naked flames to provide light, as these could pose a fire hazard. Keep some bottled water, non-perishable food that doesn’t need cooking, a tin opener, and baby formula and pet food if needed.  Find out their power/load block letter. In the event of a national energy shortage, emergency power cuts could be scheduled on a rotating area-by-area basis, with each area assigned a “load block letter”. Sign up to their energy supplier’s Priority Service Register, if eligible, to let them know that you need additional support during a power cut. Write down frequencies of any local or national radio stations for news updates. Check with telecare device manufacturers that personal alarms, diabetes sensors or other equipment will work during a power cut. Download or print out offline versions of maps.
