A young Ryan Garcia fought in a tough sparring session with Rolly Romero, which has since resurfaced.
Garcia will meet rival Romero in a first-ever boxing show at New York’s Times Square this Friday night.
Garcia sparred Romero over eight years ago and struggledBut it will not be the first time the pair have traded blows, albeit their original meeting came in a non-competitive scenario.
It was over eight years ago with Garcia merely a teenager and making his early strides into the sport.
But a full and lengthy video emerged of their sparring rounds, and it has haunted ‘King Ry’ ever since.
The footage shows the rugged and aggressive Romero, a former WBA super lightweight world champion, putting his weight on Garcia.
And it was certainly a boxing lesson for the supremely talented Garcia, who was being roughed up by the more experienced fighter at the time.
Romero landed some big shots in the spar and certainly didn’t hold back against Garcia, who has gone on to become a superstar in the sport.
The footage has resurfaced and gone viral with their super-lightweight encounter in such an iconic setting fast approaching.
Garcia has spoken about the footage insisting it was a tough night at the office, but insists the real test will be now.
He said: “Me and Rolly sparred about eight years ago, it was rough sparring.
“He continued to use that to boost his career but I don’t have no bad blood with him.

“I want to be great, I have also wanted to fight the best fighters. I mean, if I was clout chasing, he’d have had clout, but he didn’t have any.
“It’s just sparring, we’re gonna see the real fight in the ring, it’ll be one of the biggest fights in US history that’s for sure.
“I said years ago me and him were going to fight at welterweight, I outgrew 140lbs and 135lbs long, long ago. I’m all muscle right now.”
Garcia is now a transformed fighter and has made huge improvements and carries lightning hand speed and some dangerous shots including a ferocious left hook.
He has just one defeat to his name which came against fellow superstar Gervonta Davis, who stopped him in 2023.
Romero has also lost to Davis and Isaac Cruz and wants to bounce back in yet another big fight.
The pair will move up to 147lbs, with the WBA welterweight ‘regular’ title on the line.
And Garcia believes despite Romero getting on top in their old sparring, he has not improved since.
“[He’s] not really [evolved] to be honest,” Garcia added. “I kind of just see him still making the same mistakes.
“Still kind of fighting the same. He hasn’t really made that many adjustments to be honest.
“His chin actually looks like it’s gotten a lot weaker.”
