No more PSL vs IPL, please! Multan Sultans owner urges PCB to window, scrap draft for auction ...Middle East

Until a few years ago, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was often called the second-best franchise league in the world. Of course, the Indian Premier League (IPL) stood on the top alone. No one else came close. Cut to now, it isn’t even among the top three leagues.

PCB pits PSL with IPL

The pitches, players and crowds. All are a problem. As if the PSL wasn’t suffering enough, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to pit the PSL against the IPL. Due to the Champions Trophy, of which Pakistan was the host, the PCB decided to shift their usual window of February to March.

This meant the PSL 2025 season clashed with IPL 2025. The team owners were already wary of this. They had urged PCB to change the tournament window, but the board didn’t agree to do so and also hinted this may continue to happen going forward as well. And they suffered the consequence of that big time.

In some matches, there has been more security than the crowd. Most top players aren’t there since IPL took them away. Corbin Bosch left Peshawar Zalmi for the Mumbai Indians. After which the team owners urged PCB to hand the South African a 1-year ban.

The PSL 2025 season may see the lowest attendance, and the quality of play might be at its lowest due to the lack of foreign players. That’s why Multan Sultans owner Ali Khan Tareen has pleaded with the PCB to change the PSL window going forward.

“Over the past 10 years, the PSL has been home to some iconic stars who have helped build our league. Players like: Darren Sammy, Shane Watson, Colin Munro, Rilee Rossouw and many more. But we need to ask ourselves: Can we keep attracting players of this calibre for the next decade if we keep clashing with the IPL window? Or will we keep losing our top performers to the IPL after a season or two? Although we were supportive of the clash, I’m not really feeling this window. Especially with the day games in this heat. Perhaps a rethink is needed,” the Multan Sultans owner wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Auction instead of PSL draft

Ali Khan Tareen didn’t stop just there. He also urged PCB to change the draft model. For the unaware, PSL, along with other franchise leagues like The Hundred and Big Bash League, uses a draft system for squad selection. In a draft, players are allocated in a category with a fixed sum. This means each team is equal and can select players from each category in an order.

But the Multan Sultans owners don’t want this. He feels a player auction would be better for PSL. It increases the buzz. The permutations and combinations. Fans get involved. As many know, an IPL auction is an event of its own. And that’s what Tareen wants for PSL as well.

“I think we need to move back to the winter and ditch the draft model for an auction,” he added.
