Islamic State targets SDF elements in Deir Ezzor ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for killing five elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in an operation carried out in Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria.

According to a statement from the group, conveyed by the Amaq Agency yesterday, Monday, April 28, the group attacked an SDF point in the Jazrat al-Bouhamid area of the western Deir Ezzor countryside early Monday morning.

The Islamic State’s statement mentioned that the attack was executed with automatic firearms, resulting in five fatalities, and then they retreated without sustaining any casualties.

A correspondent for Enab Baladi in Deir Ezzor reported that five members of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) affiliated with the SDF were killed in the Jazrat al-Bouhamid area of western Deir Ezzor.

The deceased were from the town of Hatla, situated in the northeastern part of Deir Ezzor, according to the correspondent.

According to the Amaq Agency, the assassination operation occurred in the context of the “ongoing revenge,” as it stated, for the prisoners in the al-Hol camp in eastern al-Hasakah, which contains fighters from the Islamic State group and their families.

At the time of this news release, the official channels of the SDF or Asayish had not indicated any casualties among their ranks due to the attack by the Islamic State.

The Asayish had carried out a security campaign in the al-Hol camp, which began on April 18 and lasted for six days.

The most recent campaign resulted in the arrest of 20 members of the Islamic State and collaborators, as well as the confiscation of three Kalashnikov rifles, three pistols, several magazines and ammunition, and military equipment, according to Asayish.

Warnings of a resurgence of Islamic State activity

The New York Times warned in a report published on April 9 that the Islamic State group has shown renewed activity in Syria and regained strength.

The group has attracted new fighters and increased the number of its attacks, according to officials from the United Nations and the United States, raising the risk of instability in Syria.

The American newspaper noted that while the Islamic State is far from its strength a decade ago, when it controlled large areas of Syria and Iraq, experts warn that the group may find a way to free thousands of its seasoned fighters held in SDF prisons.

Washington’s allies have acted in several directions to limit the movements of the Islamic State. The SDF announced its operation towards the city of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria to prevent the group from gaining control of new territories, while the Free Syrian Army has moved to control the eastern Homs countryside for the same purpose and remains active in these areas.

Over the past years, the Islamic State group has been active in the Syrian desert area adjacent to the Iraq border, between the provinces of Homs and Deir Ezzor.
