Transforming Birth Experiences: Midwives and MemorialCare’s Orange County Hospitals Unite for Mothers ...Middle East

News by : (The Orange County Register) -

For many expecting mothers, the decision of where and how to give birth is deeply personal and filled with questions. Two MemorialCare community hospitals in Orange County—Orange Coast Medical Center and Saddleback Medical Center—offer expecting mothers the advantages of partnering with midwives throughout their pregnancy. These partnerships provide mothers with both the security of hospital care and the holistic, personalized approach that midwives are renowned for.

“Our midwives are an integral part of our maternal health team,” says Jennifer Ayala, MSN, RNC-OB, EFM-C, PMH-C, director of maternal child health services, Orange Coast Medical Center. “They work closely with our physicians to offer a wide range of care that is both holistic and evidence based. This allows us to tailor our care to the specific needs of each mother, whether she’s looking for a natural birth experience or requires medical interventions.”

At Orange Coast and Saddleback Medical Centers, the collaboration between midwives and obstetricians provides expecting mothers with a comprehensive approach to childbirth. From early pregnancy through postpartum care, mothers have access to the expertise of midwives, who focus on nurturing the body’s natural processes, and the reassurance of medical specialists on hand if complications arise.

The midwifery philosophy of care includes prenatal education and counseling, which enables women to make informed choices for their best birth experience. Certified nurse midwives provide support through labor for women choosing a medicated or unmedicated birth but are also able to offer multiple pain relief options and increased intervention as expectant mothers desire or as their needs during labor change.

“Midwives offer a nurturing and patient-centered approach, focusing on emotional and mental well-being as much as the physical aspects of pregnancy and birth,” says Christine Huff, MSN-INF, RNC-OB, director, The Women’s Hospital, Saddleback Medical Center. “This complements the hospital setting where mothers can feel confident knowing they have a full spectrum of care at their disposal.”

Certified nurse midwives are educated in two disciplines: midwifery and nursing. They earn graduate degrees, complete a midwifery education program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME) and pass a national certification examination administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) to receive the professional designation of certified nurse midwife.

MemorialCare patients can deliver with a MemorialCare certified nurse-midwife at both Orange Coast and Saddleback Medical Centers. MemorialCare’s midwives see expectant mothers in MemorialCare Medical Group’s primary care offices located throughout Orange County for their pregnancy, so the team stays together from conception through delivery. In addition, all locations in MemorialCare are on the same electronic medical records system ensuring coordinated care, ease of access and saving busy families time with convenience.

The Women’s Hospital at Saddleback Medical Center and the Childbirth Center at Orange Coast Medical Center offers a unique blend of clinical excellence, comfort amenities, and a compassionate culture. MemorialCare has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a “high performing” hospital in maternity care. It has also been recognized for its excellence in maternal care, achieving lower C-section rates compared to regional and national benchmarks through the Maternal Quality Care Collaborative and the California Health & Human Services Agency. The hospitals maintain the dignity and compassion of putting the patient first with services such as maternity concierge, support groups, and lactation consultation and support.
