The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 might be expanding. There might be a chance that after a couple of years, the number of matches might be increased by 30%. But it isn’t all. There is a chance that the number of teams, which is currently 10, might be increased as well.
The IPL started as an 8-team event. And that was the case from 2008 to 2021. Yes, there was a period when new teams were added from 2011 to 2013, but it wasn’t a permanent thing. Then finally in 2022, the league expanded. The Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) came into existence.
New teams from IPL 2028?
We are currently 3 years into a 5-year broadcast cycle. Therefore, no changes can be made until the IPL 2027 season. So no new teams like GT and LSG can be added for the next 2 years at least.
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal hasn’t ruled out the possibility of adding new teams to the league. He feels there won’t be any new introductions if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) thinks the quality of cricket won’t be high and it will affect the viewership.
“Ten is a good number for now. Paramount is the interest in the tournament and the quality of cricket that we play… I don’t see any scope in the short term. Going forward, with how this whole landscape evolves, we’ll take a call accordingly,” Dhumal told ESPNcricinfo.
