Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on Sunday that the United States has “not been respectful” in the way its officials have discussed their interest in taking over the country.
“The talks from the United States have not been respectful,” he said at a press conference near Copenhagen, alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
“The words used have not been respectful. That’s why we need in this situation, we need to stand together,” he added.
Nielsen made clear that Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, “will never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by just anyone.”
The remarks come during Nielsen’s three-day trip to Denmark, where leaders of both countries seek to strengthen cooperation as President Trump makes his interest in acquiring the country clear.
“Denmark has the will to invest in the Greenlandic society, and we don’t just have that for historical reasons. We also have that because we are part of (the Danish) commonwealth with each other,” Frederiksen said.
“We of course have a will to also continue investing in the Greenlandic society,” she added.
Asked whether there are plans to meet with Trump, the Danish prime minister said, “We always want to meet with the American president.”
“Of course we want to,” she continued. “But I think we have been very, very clear in what is the (Danish commonwealth’s) approach to all parts of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
