Ex-Manchester United coach Eric Ramsay has had an interview for the vacant managerial position at Southampton, talkSPORT understands.

Ramsay, currently in change of MLS side Minnesota United, is not expected to get the job, but has been spoken to with a view to the future.

Ramsay is being considered as the new Southampton bossGetty

He has been in charge at MLS side Minnesota since February 2024, where his side finished sixth in the Western Conference last season.

Just 33 years of age, Ramsay is the youngest coach in the MLS and made history as the youngest ever when he joined.

Ramsay followed the coaching path after graduating from Loughborough University with a sports science and management degree, working at Swansea and Shrewsbury before joining Chelsea in 2019.

As well as working at United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag, he also coached Chelsea’s Under-23s.

Southampton could be set to follow that trend by appointing a youthful boss themselves.

The Saints have also met with Lens boss Will Still but are determined to take their time over the appointment.

Still, who is just 31, took charge of Lens last summer after interviewing for the role with Sunderland.

Danny Rohl, David Wagner and Frank Lampard are other names in the frame but Steven Gerrard is not under consideration

The process is being led by group technical director Johannes Spores.

Ramsay’s experience in the MLS is certainly serving him well, with the 33-year-old recently discussing the prospect of a move back to England.

Will Still is also in the running for the jobAFP

He said: “I am self-aware enough to know I am by no means the finished article as a head coach.

“I wanted an experience that was going to give me the best chance to develop, the opportunity to make some mistakes and manage something that feels big.

“It feels like there is scrutiny on MLS. There is media to deal with. There is pressure you have to deal with exist, albeit not to the same extent as England.

“The Championship would have been equally as testing, if not more so, but with that constant nagging doubt, looking objectively, that there is a much shorter life-cycle for guys who go into that league.”

Southampton are preparing for life back in the EFL after suffering relegation earlier in April.

Just 24 hours after their fate was sealed, Ivan Juric left his role with the Saints starting their search for a new head coach.
