Antonio Rudiger could be banned for 12 games after being accused of throwing an object at the referee in Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona.

In the closing stages of Madrid’s 3-2 extra-time loss, Rudiger and his teammates were furious about a decision that went against them as Kylian Mbappe attempted to mount an attack.

The centre-back, who had already been substituted off, had to be held back as he tried to get to the referee.

He then appeared to throw a missile at the referee, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, which is believed to be ice.

Another clip appears to show him attempting to launch more bags of ice in the direction of the official, but he was held back.

Fans reacting on social media said: “Generational headloss.”

Another added: “Rudiger shouldn’t even receive his medal, that headloss at the end was unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”

Rudiger, along with Lucas Vazquez and Jude Bellingham, were shown red cards.

In his referee report, the official said: “In the 120th minute, player (22) Rudiger, Antonio, was sent off for the following reason: For throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me. After being shown the red card, he had to be restrained by several members of the coaching staff, displaying an aggressive attitude.

“In the 120th minute, player (17) Vazquez Iglesias, Lucas, was sent off for the following reason: For protesting one of our decisions, entering the field of play for several meters, making gestures of disagreement.

“In the 999th minute, player (5) Bellingham, Jude Victor William, was sent off for the following reason: After the end of the match, he approached our position in an aggressive attitude, having to be restrained by his teammates.”

A clip of Bellingham later emerged of him in the tunnel ranting: “Everything 50/50 goes their way, everything 50/50.”

According to the Spanish press, Rudiger faces a ban of between four and 12 games, meaning he would not play again this season.

However, if his actions were deemed more serious and are deemed an ‘assault against referees’, then he could be banned for up to six months.

The appointment of De Burgos Bengoetxea for the final had caused controversy with Real Madrid outwardly expressing their displeasure.

Real Madrid TV even broadcast a video of his mistakes and pointed out the club’s poor win percentage when he was in charge.

It led to him breaking down in tears in a pre-match press conference and saying:

“When a child of yours goes to school and there are kids telling him that his father is a ‘thief’ and comes home crying, it’s totally messed up.

“What I do is try to educate my son, to say that his father is honest, above all honest, who can make mistakes, like any sportsperson.”

Speaking after the game, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti refused to comment on the referee’s performance.

“No comment on the ref,” he said.

On the game itself, he added: “We did everything we could. I can’t criticise the team. We defended very well. I’m hurt.”

“Now it’s time to fight for La Liga. We will rest for 2 days now.”
