The Diamond Heels couldn’t overcome an early deficit at Pittsburgh Saturday, as UNC fell 4-2 in the second game of a three-game series with the Panthers.
Pitt struck early against UNC starter Aidan Haugh, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after each of the first four Panther batters reached base. The hosts added two more runs in the fifth on a single and a hit batter and another run in the sixth on a solo home run, putting UNC in a 4-0 hole.
Gavin Gallaher finally put the Diamond Heels on the board in the top of the seventh, clubbing his fourth home run in the last two games. Tyson Bass followed that up with a solo shot of his own in the eighth, but that home run would be the final hit of the day for the UNC bats. As a team, UNC finished with just four hits on the day.
The loss drops the Diamond Heels to 32-10 overall and 14-9 in ACC play. The series’ rubber match with the Panthers is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. UNC hasn’t lost a three-game series since March 14-16 at Louisville.
