San Diego FC’s losing streak continued Saturday when the expansion club fell 3-1 duringa home match at Snapdragon Stadium.
Real Salt Lake, in avenging a March defeat at SDFC’s hands, dropped San Diego’s overall record to 4-4-2 with 14 points.
Salt Lake struck first when midfielder Diego Luna scored with a right-footed shot from the left side of the box to the middle right zone of the goal. The contest was already 46 minutes old by the time he made the goal.
Luna, a Northern California native, only had been ruled eligible to play in the match a few daysearlier. On Tuesday, a red card that he’d received during RSL’s match against Toronto FC last weekend was rescinded by an independent review panel.
After Luna’s goal, SDFC countered and gave the home side supporters hope when star winger Chucky Lozano scored off a penalty kick just as the first half was about to end. He managed to hit a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner of the opponents’ goal. Lozano’s teammate, defensive midfielder Anibal Godoy picked up the assist.
The score came 50 minutes into the game, about 95 seconds before halftime was called. The first half ended with one goal apiece for each club, with both scores coming during nearly seven minutes of stoppage time.

He scored from a penalty kick with a right-footed shot to the goal’s bottom left corner. Then, in the 65th minute, Real Salt Lake defender Sam Junqua scored with a left-footed shotto the bottom right corner of the goal.
Eight minutes of stoppage time was tacked onto the end of the match, but this time, neither team managed to score during it.
This was SLC’s first-ever match at Snapdragon Stadium, and the first time San Diego has faced another MLS team for the second time.
With Saturday’s loss, SDFC has now dropped three straight matches, with the previous twodefeats coming during road games. Before that, San Diego had gone unbeaten in six of seven games to start its inaugural season.
San Diego’s will remain at home, this time to host FC Dallas on May 3. Dallas, with a record of 3-3-3, plays Sunday against Miami.
In the post-match press conference, head coach Mikey Varas struck both and optimistic andrealistic tones.

We’re working really hard every week, but this is still a young club and things aren’t where we want them to be. We’re just going to get back to work and make sure we turn it around,” he said.
