A long snapper finally brought an end to Vanderbilt‘s draft drought.
It took until Day 3 of this weekend’s NFL Draft in Green Bay, and the draft pick came late in the seventh round, so Vanderbilt’s 3-year streak without having a player drafted was nearly extended on Saturday. But instead, long snapper Julian Ashby was taken with the 251st overall pick by the New England Patriots.
At long last, a Commodore was heading to the NFL via the draft. Vandy’s infamous draft streak was just the second time in the history of the SEC that a program went 3 consecutive drafts without having a player selected. The other time it happened, naturally, was Vanderbilt. The Commodores went from 1993-95 without having a draft pick.

— Vanderbilt Football (@VandyFootball) April 26, 2025Before Ashby was picked on Saturday, the last Vanderbilt player who was drafted was defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, who was the 54th pick in the 2021 draft. Finally, there is another Vanderbilt name to place after his in the history of the NFL Draft.
Remarkably, 310 SEC players were drafted since Vanderbilt’s last player had been taken. Now, finally, that ugly number is gone with the selection of Ashby on Saturday.
Ashby instantly becomes a notable player in Vanderbilt football history just by virtue of him ending the draft drought.
