The Chula Vista Police Department will hold a checkpoint Saturday in an attempt to catch those who are driving under the influence.
From 6 p.m. to midnight, the checkpoint will be in place at an undisclosed location.
Checkpoint locations are chosen based on data where crashes related to impaired driving are more prevalent. The goal is to deter impaired driving and take more DUI drivers off the roads.
Across San Diego County, 30.5% of crash fatalities involved an impaired driver in 2024, which is nearly 4% higher than the year before, according to UC Berkeley’s Transportation Injury Mapping System.
However, in Chula Vista, 11.1% of crash fatalities in 2024 involved an impaired driver, a nearly 9% decrease from the previous year.
The department also reminded the public that impaired driving is not exclusive to alcohol, as some prescription and over-the-counter medications may impair driving. Additionally, while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving high will result in a DUI.
For a first-time DUI charge, drivers can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
