Ex-Premier League manager on the brink of ‘career highlight’ in sixth tier ...Middle East

Phil Brown won promotion with Hull City to the Premier League and kept them up for a season, but now he is aiming to add another major achievement to his resume.

On Saturday, his side Kidderminster Harriers target promotion back into the National League.

Brown admitted he would of bite a hand off to be one win away from winning the titleGetty

It would mark a decade since Kidderminster were amongst the top of non-league football.

They travel to Southport at 3pm, where three points would secure them the National North title and automatic promotion.

But if they draw or lose, the title could slip out of their hands and into those of Brackley Town, who also sit on 89 points.

If both teams lose, third place Scunthorpe United could swoop in and lift the title on 90 points.

Only one team can earn promotion, as second to seventh will battle it out in the playoffs for the final National League spot.

When Brown became one of Hull’s joint caretaker managers alongside Colin Murphy in December 2006, the side were 22nd in the Championship.

Over a year later, he was the manager who led Hull to their first promotion to the Premier League in 2008, after beating Bristol City in the playoff final.

He also led Southend United to promotion after their 2015 League Two playoff win against Wycombe Wanderers.

“This will be a career highlight,” he told The Sun. “It really does feel more exciting than getting promoted to the Premier League.

“I’ve won two promotions as a manager and me and my assistant Neil McDonald were also part of Sam Allardyce’s backroom team at Bolton. But this does feel special.

“I might have been there, seen it and done it — and everyone seems to think if you’ve had success in the Premier League you should be able to have success in the lower divisions.”

He continued: “That’s a load of rubbish. The bottom line is if your owners aren’t allowing you to do things, right then you’re going to have a problem.

“You’ve got to cut your cloth accordingly and myself and Macca have learned a lot about the process of being successful.

“Macca worked with Sam at Blackburn and West Ham too — and he has assisted me in the past — and having the right backroom team is key.”

Kidderminster’s fans have rallied together as they try to push their team over the line shown by the 5,341 who attended Monday’s match against Hereford.

A new record, beating the 5,327 in attendance to watch their 2022 FA Cup tie against West Ham.
