SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The San Francisco Fire Department said one person was critically injured in an apartment unit fire in the city's Tenderloin section.

The blaze broke out just before 4:50 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of Ellis Street. Fire crews said there was heavy smoke at the scene when they arrived.

Nearby residents and commuters are advised to avoid the area of Ellis Street between Leavenworth and Jones streets until further notice.

SFFD said two people and two dogs were rescued from the fire. San Francisco Fire said one of the two people declined medical treatment.

The cause of the blaze is being probed.
