United Nations raises Syrian flag at its headquarters ...Syria

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani participated today, Friday, April 25, in the ceremony of raising the Syrian flag at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA.

The Syrian delegation that arrived in the United States, on its first official visit since the fall of Bashar al-Assad, included Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, Finance Minister Mohammed Yosr Bernieh, and Central Bank Governor Abdul Qader Hasriyeh.

Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani told Al Jazeera channel that raising the Syrian flag at the United Nations is a step that will enhance Syria’s role in international organizations.

Al-Shibani noted that “the world now needs to hear the demands of the Syrian people after losing our seat at the United Nations,” adding, “We are open to the international community and look forward to being treated likewise.”

The Syrian Foreign Minister called for lifting sanctions against Syria and helping to revive its economy, explaining that with the disappearance of the reasons for the sanctions, they should be lifted and not continue to target the lives of the Syrian people.

The new Syrian government is counting on the visit, which comes amid exceptional circumstances, with difficult efforts to rebuild an economy that has been devastated by war, burdened by debts, ongoing sanctions, and the costs of reconstruction.

Today, al-Shibani will attend a briefing session at the United Nations Security Council, which will be the first public appearance of a high-ranking Syrian government official in the United States since the fall of al-Assad.

A delegation of Syrian officials traveled to the United States this week to attend meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Washington, along with meetings at the United Nations in New York.

It is still unclear whether officials from President Donald Trump’s administration will meet with al-Shibani during the visit, according to the Associated Press.

Last week, Republican members of the US Congress, Marlin Stutzman from Indiana and Cory Mills from Florida, made an unofficial visit to Damascus organized by a Syrian-American organization, where they met with interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Mills told the Associated Press prior to his meeting with al-Sharaa that “ultimately, the decision will be up to President Trump regarding whether to lift the sanctions or not, although he said that ‘Congress can advise.'”

Mills added that he discussed with al-Sharaa the American conditions for easing sanctions, including ensuring the destruction of any remaining chemical weapons from al-Assad’s era, coordinating efforts in combating terrorism, devising a plan for dealing with foreign militants in Syria, and providing guarantees to Israel that Syria will not pose a threat.
