It wasn’t meant to be this way for Shedeur Sanders – and father Deion was quick to pounce on the haters.
After months of hype, the NFL Draft got underway in Green Bay on Thursday – and after 32 selections were made, Shedeur was still waiting to hear his name called.
Sanders Sr and Jr worked together with the Colorado BuffaloesGettyNeither Shedeur or Deion were in Wisconsin for the NFL Draft, instead Shedeur shared a video of a custom made room at his home in Texas where he would await the news.
Colorado teammate Travis Hunter was the second overall pick after a huge trade from Jacksonville to select the two-way Florida born unicorn.
However Shedeur’s selection, or non-selection, was always going to be one of the stories of the night and Deion’s thoughts were always going to cause a stir.
Prior to the draft, ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky delivered his verdict on Shedeur’s standing with a blunt assessment – and then returned after the first round to explain in more detail.
Deion took exception, and responded to a reply to Orlovsky’s video that claimed the former NFL had become a ‘hater’ with four simple words of his own in a post on X.
“Turned into a hater,” one fan said of Orlovsky. “Hate to see it man.”
“Yes he did. Wow!” replied Sanders Snr.
Orlovsky responded to the original message, getting involved in an a number of exchanges on social media to clarify his thoughts and assessment of Shedeur’s standing.
“Not in the least. It’s my job for every guy to point out the good and bad. Like I have. I’ve said endlessly I like Shedeur. I’ve done a flaws tape for all top QBs every year. Same this year,” he posted.
When asked about how Jaxson Dart – who the New York Giants traded back into the first round for despite being linked with Shedeur – would have bee doing the same things Shedeur accomplished in Boulder, Orlovsky added.
“Probably no. But that doesn’t make me a hater. I like Shedeur. Done a lot to highlight the things he does well. Said he’s a first round pick. Hope he is.”
@DeionSandersShedeur’s father Deion made his feelings clear in a post on X[/caption] Sanders released a video at the end of the first roundX@NFL_DovKleimanShedeur is widely expected to be among the first names called on Friday when the Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints and New York Jets are among the first ten teams on the board for the second road.
All four have varying needs on the quarterback front and Shedeur may fit as a second round prospect.
Orlovsky took to social media after the draft to admit his surprise that Sanders had fallen so far, posting a video to X from Green Bay.
“I am surprised, I thought the Steelers would – and should – take Shedeur,” he said.

“They must know that Rodgers is gonna play, and he wanted to wait – or maybe Cousins but no second round pick, I thought, ‘take Shedeur’ at 21 or maybe trade back and get [Jalen] Milroe late in the first round.
“They’ve got to have a plan in place with Rodgers or Cousins, or feel really good about it.
“I thought it would be Shedeur, they have a giant question mark at the position – it’s” unbelievable that the quarterback question is such a question mark.”
It feels like only a few months ago, Shedeur was being tipped as a contender for the first overall pick but the wait will go into a second day.
Florida’s Cam Ward was taken number one by the Tennessee Titans and the only other first round QB was Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart.
The Giants, who took Penn State Edge Abdul Carter with the third pick, traded back into the first round to take Dart with the 25th pick, all while Shedeur was forced to sit and watch on.
Shedeur enjoyed an impressive college career with Jackson State and Colorado, following his father from JSU to the Buffaloes and leading both teams to winning seasons.
His poise in the pocket, rather than athleticism, were always regarded as his primary assets and while the hype of being Neon Dion’s son ensured there have always been headlines, most evaluators have had the 23-year-old as a late first, early second round QB.
Shedeur’s defiant reaction to his draft slide was a little more of what you would expect from someone who has conducted himself with professionalism throughout the process.
In a video posted to his social accounts, Shedeur admitted Day 1 did not go as planned – and that attention was fixed on Day 2.
“We all didn’t expect this of course. But I feel like with God anything possible, everything possible,” he said.
“I don’t feel like this happened for no reason. All this is, is of course fuel to the fire.
“Under no circumstance we all know this shouldn’t have happened. But we understand we on to bigger and better things. Tomorrow’s the day. We are going to be happy regardless. Legendary.”
