Texas A&M is back in the first round of the NFL Draft.
With the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday night, the Cincinnati Bengals selected defensive end Shemar Stewart.
Stewart becomes the first former Texas A&M player to be picked in the opening round of the NFL Draft since Kenyon Green was taken 15th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s the 37th first-round draft pick in Texas A&M history, and joins a group of Texas A&M draft picks on the defensive line that includes former No. 1 overall selection Myles Garrett.
All throughout the season, Stewart looked like a high draft pick in the NFL, as he controlled the defensive line for the Aggies.
Stewart closed out the year with 31 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 2 pass breakups, and 1 forced fumble.
He played three seasons for Texas A&M, starting 19 out of 37 games. He started 12 games last season and 6 games as a true freshman. He has never been a stat-stuffer at the position, but he showcased some incredible athleticism and speed at the NFL Combine. He ran a 4.67 40-yard dash, and many NFL analysts think his playing days are ahead of him.
One thing that will be interesting to see is where Stewart plays next season. He has the versatility to play anywhere on the defensive line, and that versatility should get him on the field sooner rather than later.
