Texas saw one of its own come off the board in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday night, extending a fledgling streak to 3 consecutive years with a first-round choice.
With the ninth overall pick, the New Orleans Saints selected offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr.
Banks becomes the 49th all-time first-round draft pick in Texas football history. He’s also the first former Texas offensive lineman to be taken in the first round since 2002.
Last year featured 11 Texas draft picks, and the 2025 draft promises to be just as eventful. Banks getting the party started early comes as no surprise; he was a fixture for Steve Sarkisian as the Longhorns made back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances.
Banks played in and started 42 games for the Longhorns across his 3 years with the program. In 2024, he won the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy. He was also part of an offensive line that was named a Joe Moore Award finalist. Banks finished out his career with a Freshman All-American selection in 2022, a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2023, and a first-team All-American selection in 2024.
Initially, Banks committed to play for Mario Cristobal at Oregon. When Cristobal left to take the Miami job, Banks flipped and signed with Texas. He was a 5-star recruit out of Summer Creek High School in Humble, Texas.
In 2022, he started all 13 games for Texas at left tackle, blocking for Doak Walker winner Bijan Robinson. In 2023, he started 14 times, helping Texas capture a Big 12 championship in its final season in the league. The Longhorns also made their first-ever appearance in the CFP. Then, in 2024, Banks started in 15 of UT’s 16 games as the program reached the SEC Championship game and advanced to the CFP semifinals.
