Cam Ward becomes third Miami player to be taken first overall in 2025 NFL Draft ...Middle East

Cam Ward became just the third former Miami player to be drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday night, joining defensive lineman Russell Maryland (1991) and quarterback Vinny Testaverde (1987).

The Tennessee Titans picked Ward with the top selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Entering the day, Ward was the overwhelming favorite to be the top choice, and there proved to be very little drama on draft night surrounding his selection.

Ward becomes the Hurricanes’ 66th all-time first-round draft pick and the program’s first since 2021.

The 6-foot-2 passer began his career as a no-star recruit and ended it as a Heisman Trophy finalist. Ward was a Wing-T quarterback in high school with very little tape to sell to interested Division I teams, so he played for FCS Incarnate Word and proved immediately he could hang as a college quarterback.

Ward was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award at the FCS level after leading UIW to a Southland Conference championship and a 10-3 record. He followed his coach to Washington State in 2022 and immediately became the Cougars’ starting quarterback.

In 2 seasons and 25 appearances with Wazzu, Ward threw for 6,963 passing yards and 48 touchdowns compared to 16 interceptions. He also ran for 13 touchdowns. Washington State went just 12-13 with Ward as its starter though, struggling to consistently surround him with complementary talent.

Prior to the 2024 season, Ward entered the transfer portal and put his name into the 2024 NFL Draft class. In the end, he landed at Miami hoping to prove he was a top-flight quarterback.

Ward dazzled right away, throwing for 385 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing 74% of his passes in a 41-17 beatdown of rival Florida in The Swamp. Ward looked to be toying with the Gator defense at times, setting the stage for a masterful season.

Miami won its first 9 games as Ward played himself into the thick of the Heisman discussion. He finished the season with FBS career-best marks of 4,313 passing yards, 39 touchdowns, and a 67.2% completion rate. Ward was the ACC Player of the Year, a consensus first-team All-American, and the recipient of the Davey O’Brien Award.

He set Miami’s single-season record for passing yards, touchdowns, and completion rate.

The Titans went just 3-14 last season. Ward will step in, looking to compete with former Kentucky quarterback Will Levis, who was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Ward is the fourth quarterback to be selected in the first round by Tennessee this century. None of the previous 3 — Marcus Mariota (2015), Jake Locker (2011), and Vince Young (2006) — spent more than 5 seasons with the franchise.
