Texas’s defensive front just got a big boost for the 2025 season.
The Longhorns have earned a commitment from former Syracuse defensive lineman Maraad Watson. After earning freshman All-America honors in 2024, Watson will be taking his talents to Austin where he will try to help Texas get back to the College Football Playoff.

— Hayes Fawcett (@Hayesfawcett3) April 22, 2025Watson visited Texas on Tuesday and it seems that trip went very well. Ohio State was also interested in his services, but he ultimately has chosen to go with the Longhorns.
After being under-recruited as a high school prospect in the class of 2024, Watson broke out last fall to the tune of 31 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 1 pass deflection. He was a key piece of Syracuse’s run defense as well. While the Orange struggled vs. the run as a unit, Watson graded out as the Orange’s best run defender per Pro Football Focus. He earned a grade of 77.4 from PFF across 200 rush defense snaps.
Texas now has 10 transfer commitments in 2025. The class ranks No. 26 nationally, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. However, the Longhorns signed the No. 1 high school recruiting class for this cycle.
Watson was the No. 1,212 player in the country for the class of 2024, per 247Sports Composite rankings. He will have 3 years of eligibility remaining.
