Shakhtar Donetsk will hope Mykhailo Mudryk passing a lie detector test is a sign of a positive outcome in his efforts to clear his name.

Mudryk was provisionally suspended last December when he tested positive for the banned substance Meldonium.

Meldonium, which was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) prohibited list in 2016, is said to increase blood flow and carry more oxygen to muscle tissue to aid an individual’s endurance.

It was Mudryk’s ‘A’ urine sample, taken last October, that was found to be positive for doping.

However, the results of his ‘B’ sample have yet to be released.

Upon learning the results of the test, Mudryk was left in ‘complete shock’ and strenuously denied any wrongdoing.

However, unknowingly ingesting a banned substance is not a permissible excuse as the Chelsea winger faces a four-year ban.

To aid his defence, Mudryk underwent a lie detector test which, according to Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin, he passed.

Even though Mudryk is no longer a Shakhtar player, having moved from the club to Chelsea in 2023 for £88million, Palkin admitted the Ukrainian club has a vested interest in the winger’s case.

That’s because there is €30m (£25m) riding on the decision for Shakhtar.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s Hawksbee and Jacobs, football correspondent Ben Jacobs broke down why that was the case.

“€70million fee plus €30million in add-ons, from that €70million, €25million has been invested by the Shakhtar owner into humanitarian causes relating to the war in Ukraine,” Jacobs said.

“Shakhtar used the rest of it to pay off debts which means they’re not in breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP), so they could remain in European competition without issue from UEFA.

“And now there’s €30million in bonuses, none of which to my knowledge have been paid yet.

“So, if Mudryk doesn’t play for Chelsea again, then Shakhtar will effectively not be eligible for those bonuses.”

As for the lie detector test being used, Jacobs pointed out it won’t necessarily be decisive in proving Mudryk innocent.

However, it can be used as part of his character witness provided to the Football Association.

“Unfortunately for Mudryk, if he just says, ‘Here’s a lie detector test that I passed, I didn’t knowingly break any rules’, but then the FA say, ‘Yes, but you were given a substance and you should have known what was in it and you didn’t,’ then the fact that this character statement says ‘okay, I didn’t mean to do anything wrong’ won’t help him,” Jacobs said.

“The default is a four-year ban and from there you have to mitigate and explain why.

“But if it’s sabotage or if it’s a lack of testing protocol that has maybe led to a false positive, then Mudryk and his lie detector test could be used.

“It’s just not legally admissible. But it’s not to say that it won’t form a small part of the jigsaw puzzle.”

Mudryk’s last appearance for the Blues came on November 28 as he scored the second in a 2-0 win over German outfit FC Heidenheim in the Europa Conference League.
