Vegetation management burning near the Cal Fire headquarters in Mendocino County is scheduled for the next few weeks, officials with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported.
In a press release, Cal Fire officials reported that personnel with the Mendocino Unit “plan to conduct a prescribed burn of approximately 100 acres” at their Howard Forest headquarters, located at 17501 N. Highway 101, Willits.
Officials describe the operation as a “multi-day process scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 22, and end on May 9. Burning will take place at approximately 10 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m., and smoke will be visible in the area.”
Cal Fire explains that “the burn will be conducted under very tight restrictions for the personal safety of firefighters and area residents. If there are any indications that the burn cannot be conducted in a safe manner, such as high winds or local fire activity, the burn will be cancelled.”
Cal Fire also noted that “this project adds to significant work underway throughout the state and brings California one step closer towards meeting state fuels reduction goals directed by the California Fire Plan and the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan.
