DENVER (KDVR) — A Denver woman whose car was stolen and involved in a deadly crash at the 14th Avenue and Federal Boulevard intersection is speaking out for the first time.

Police say the driver who stole the vehicle was driving at a high speed, clipped two cars before he lost control and crashed. That accident sent two people to the hospital with serious injuries.

Residents say intersection where 2 people died is one of Denver’s most dangerous

It's the same intersection where two people died after being struck by a driver on April 19.

It started off as a busy day for Savannah Gallegos, who had just received her tax refund.

“I had just an agenda for the day to kind of deposit some money to my debit card and then buying some furniture for my house," said Gallegos. "Just running some errands."

She stopped at a 7-Eleven to use the restroom when she noticed she had left her purse filled with $6,000 inside.

“Maybe it was eight minutes where I left and came back," she said.

When she couldn't find it after asking the clerk inside the convenience store for surveillance footage, the single mother of four went to a nearby bus station, hoping someone could give her answers. She parked her car behind the bus and left it running for a few seconds.

“During that time, somebody jumped in my vehicle and took off with it and that's when I was like 'hey my car is being stolen,'" she said. "One of my girls just had surgery. I was going to keep her from going to school that day. It was literally her first day back. To know I could have had her in the car, if I would have left the car running, someone could have taken her."

Moments later, she learned her car, which she had had for only two months, was totaled by the driver who stole it.

“They were taking the man out the vehicle. He was still alive when he was getting taken out the vehicle they had to cut my doors and everything. It was a really bad accident," said Gallegos.

She shared some pictures from the inside of her car. Crews even had to extricate a pinned person.

“I was grateful. I seen all my kids' car seats flipped over and bent to the side with blood on them," said Gallegos. "Reality really just hit me.”

Gallegos is now trying to start over after losing all of her money and her vehicle she worked so hard to get.

“I can’t explain how much I was really anticipating finally getting the things that we need," she said.

She was taken aback when she learned that a fatal crash had happened at the same intersection nearly a week later.

“For that to happen in a short time period, there must be frequent accidents," she said.

She hopes her story serves as a reminder to be vigilant and to never leave your car running, even for a brief moment.

“In just a split second, it's crazy how your whole life can change," she said.

Gallegos's family set up a GoFundMe to help recover her losses.

FOX31 checked in with authorities to get an update about the two people sent to the hospital, and has not yet received a response.

We're also waiting to learn if the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure plans to add any safety measures to the intersection after neighbors called it dangerous.
