Leeds United, Burnley and Birmingham City are all on course to reach 100 points in their respective league campaigns. But how often has that milestone been achieved in the past?
This season could witness something unprecedented in the 137-year history of English league football: three teams reaching 100 points in the same campaign.
Both Leeds United and Burnley could reach 100 points on the final day of the Championship season, with the two automatically-promoted sides on 94 points with two games remaining.
It would be the second successive Championship season in which Burnley have achieved the feat, after winning 101 points in 2022-23 on their way to promotion to the Premier League under Vincent Kompany.
Birmingham City have won League One at a canter this season and are now only one point off the century with four games remaining. They only need eight points from 12 available to break a new points record in English Football League history (107) across the top four tiers.
Entering the 2024-25 season, only 16 teams had ever reached 100 or more points in an English league campaign. Never before, though, have three sides done so in the same season.
English Clubs to Reach 100 Points in a League Season:
York City (4th tier) – 101 points in 1983-84Swindon Town (4th tier) – 102 points in 1985-86Sunderland (2nd tier) – 105 points in 1998-99Fulham (3rd tier) – 101 points in 1998-99Fulham (2nd tier) – 101 points in 2000-01Plymouth Argyle (4th tier) – 102 points in 2001-02Wigan Athletic (3rd tier) – 100 points in 2002-03Reading (2nd tier) – 106 points in 2005-06Newcastle United (2nd tier) – 102 points in 2009-10Charlton Athletic (3rd tier) – 101 points in 2011-12Leicester City (2nd tier) – 102 points in 2013-14Wolverhampton Wanderers – (3rd tier) – 103 points in 2013-14Sheffield United (3rd tier) – 100 points in 2016-17Manchester City (1st tier) – 100 points in 2017-18Burnley (2nd tier) – 101 points in 2022-23Plymouth Argyle (3rd tier) – 101 points in 2022-23
Manchester City remain the only top-flight club in English league history to reach 100 points, as they won the Premier League title back in 2017-18. That tally was only secured with the last kick of the game in their final-day win at Southampton, with Gabriel Jesus creating history with his goal in the fourth minute of added time at St Mary’s Stadium on 13 May 2018.
Back in 1981, the EFL increased the number of points for a win from two to three, reportedly so teams would try harder to avoid boring draws. If earlier league campaigns were retroactively calculated under this system, an additional nine teams would join the 100-point club:
Tottenham Hotspur (2nd tier) – 102 points in 1919-20 (adjusted from 70 points)Doncaster Rovers (3rd tier) – 105 points in 1946-47 (adjusted from 72 points)Rotherham United (3rd tier) – 102 points in 1950-51 (adjusted from 71 points)Nottingham Forest (3rd tier) – 100 points in 1950-51 (adjusted from 70 points)Bristol City (3rd tier) – 100 points in 1950-51 (adjusted from 70 points)Hull City (3rd tier) – 100 points in 1950-51 (adjusted from 69 points)Aston Villa (3rd tier) – 102 points in 1971-72 (adjusted from 70 points)Lincoln City (4th tier) – 106 points in 1975-76 (adjusted from 74 points)Watford (4th tier) – 101 points in 1977-78 (adjusted from 71 points)
Unfortunately for either Burnley or Leeds, they could set another record should they both get to 100 points this season.
Of the 25 teams to previously reach 100 or more points in an EFL campaign (including adjusted tallies), none have failed to win their league title. That could change this season, with the Championship poised to crown a 100-point runner-up for the first time.
Before now, the most points that a team have won in an EFL season and not won the league title in that campaign were Ipswich Town in 2022-23. They secured 98 points from their 46 matches but lost out on the League One title by three points as Plymouth Argyle finished first on 101 points.
