DENVER (KDVR) -- After Pope Francis, 88, died on Monday morning, the Archdiocese of Denver is preparing arrangements and holding masses throughout the day.
The Pontiff had health struggles and was hospitalized in February. He returned to the Vatican in late March, and after attending Easter Sunday in St. Peter’s Square, it was later reported that the pope passed on Monday morning.
People across the world are mourning, and the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Denver of the Roman Catholic Church, is holding prayers to honor the pope.
What are the rites and rituals after a pope dies?At 11 a.m., the cathedral started tolling its Requiem bells for the hour. Meanwhile, there were also prayers for the pope at 11 a.m., including lighting a vigil candle for the Pontiff. Father Samuel Morehead, Rector of the Cathedral Basilica, offered special prayers from the rites of the Church for Pope Francis.
At 11:30 a.m., Denver Catholic said Father Morehead led the prayer for the repose of Pope Francis's soul. Then, at 12:10 p.m., the Most Reverend Samuel Aquila, Archbishop of Denver, will hold a special Easter Monday mass for the repose of Pope Francis' soul.
There will also be a mass at 5:30 p.m.
Local leaders react, make plans to remember Pope FrancisThe cathedral has a spot at the side altar of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus that invites people to light candles and place flowers.
The cathedral on 1530 Logan St. is also mourning in other ways. FOX31's Carly Moore reported that Morehead watched as the Denver Fire Department helped drape the black bunting over the front of the church along Colfax, which signifies a period of mourning for the church.
Denver Catholic said the cathedral also lowered the ombrellino, the special yellow-and-red umbrella used in certain processions, that symbolizes the pope’s authority, representing a vacant Holy See.
