Wolff slams ‘joke’ proposal to tweak 2026 F1 engine rules ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff has taken a firm stand against a proposed adjustment to the energy deployment rules for the sport’s 2026 hybrid power units, labeling the idea “a joke” as the Formula 1 Commission prepares to discuss potential changes.

The debate centers on concerns that the original 50/50 split between internal combustion and electric power could cause cars to run out of battery power on straights at power-sensitive circuits, leading to excessive derating.

While some advocate tweaking battery deployment, Wolff’s sharp rebuke underscores Mercedes’ frustration with revisiting regulations so close to their implementation.

However, several of the Austrian’s colleagues have offered varied perspectives, reflecting a divide in the paddock over how to balance performance and spectacle.

Radical Rethink Sparks Concern

The 2026 power unit regulations, set to emphasize a near-equal balance between internal combustion and electric power, have sparked concerns about their practical implications.

At circuits like Monza, Jeddah, Baku, and Las Vegas, fears persist that cars could deplete their battery reserves mid-straight, forcing drivers to slow dramatically—a scenario deemed detrimental to racing quality.

The F1 Commission’s upcoming meeting will explore adjustments to battery deployment, with one radical proposal suggesting a reduction in electric power from 350kW to 200kW in race trim.

More moderate suggestions include circuit-specific tweaks to mitigate derating without altering the physical hardware.

While major changes are considered unlikely, the discussion has reignited tensions, particularly for Mercedes, a dominant force in hybrid engine development. Wolff’s outspoken criticism highlights the team’s exasperation with what they see as unnecessary meddling in carefully crafted regulations.

Wolff’s Fiery Rejection

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff did not hold back when he learned the item had resurfaced for discussion.

“Reading the agenda of the F1 commission is almost as hilarious as reading some of the comments that I see on Twitter on American politics,” he said bluntly.

“I really want to protect ourselves and make no comment, but it’s a joke. A week ago, there was an engine meeting and then things like this end up on the agenda again.”

Wolff’s frustration underscores a broader sentiment among some manufacturers that the engine regulations, long in the making, should not be compromised by last-minute reversals or political maneuvering.

Horner: "Not Something We've Pushed"

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner – whose team is developing its own in-house power unit with Ford – struck a more measured tone but supported the FIA’s review process, while distancing himself from the idea that Red Bull had lobbied for change.

“I think that this is something that we asked to be looked at two years ago and it’s not something that we’ve pushed to be on the agenda this week at all,” Horner stated.

“The FIA have gone away and done their research, and I think what they want to desperately avoid is a lot of lifting and coasting in the grand prix itself, which is going to be not particularly good for the sport and hugely frustrating for the drivers.

“So, it’s not something that we’ve lobbied for or asked for, and if they’re doing it in the interest of the sport, then you’ve got to support it.”

Cowell: “It’ll Be Different. Is It Bad? Not Sure.”

Offering a technical lens on the issue, former top Mercedes engine man and current Aston Martin team principal Andy Cowell acknowledged the unique energy demands posed by long circuits like Jeddah, but didn’t see imbalance as a deal-breaker.

“With Jeddah as an example, it’s a long circuit with a fixed amount of energy to deploy and so the derates are different from other shorter circuits and that’s a feature of a hybrid system,” Cowell explained.

“It’ll be different. Is it bad? Not sure. We’ll all have the same, won’t we? So, the key thing is that everybody’s got the same technical regulations.”

Cowell’s comments reinforce the idea that even if energy deployment varies by circuit, parity among teams ensures fairness.

Stella: “It Is the Responsibility of All Stakeholders”

McLaren team boss Andrea Stella struck a statesmanlike tone, reminding stakeholders that preserving the integrity and entertainment value of F1 should remain the top priority.

“The principle I want to state very strongly is that it is the responsibility of all the stakeholders to make sure that the 2026 regulations are successful, because there’s no point in teams competing with each other if we don’t have a good sport,” he said.

“I think keeping the conversation open, such that we really go into the details considering overtaking, considering power deployment, considering power harvesting, everything that determines the quality of the product and therefore of the spectacle and therefore the health of the business; we should look into that and we shouldn’t say it’s frozen.”

“If we see that some things need to stay open, then I think we need to have this open mind and keep working on that.”

The 2026 power unit debate now boils down to a fundamental question: Should the sport stay rigidly committed to its long-term technical direction, or remain flexible to protect race quality?

For Wolff and Mercedes, the line appears to be drawn – any walk-back on hybrid deployment is a step too far. Others, like Horner and Stella, seem open to further conversation in the name of spectacle.

What’s clear is that as F1 hurtles toward a future defined by electrification and sustainability, the road to consensus is proving anything but smooth.
