Rory McIlroy will return this week after fulfilling his lifelong ambition of winning the Masters and completing the career Grand Slam.
The Northern Irishman ended an 11-year major drought after producing one of the most dramatic final rounds in Masters history.
McIlroy had his wife Erica Stroll and their daughter Poppy present for his Masters winGettyAs ever, the world number two did things the hard way, edging out Justin Rose in a playoff, the tournament’s first since 2017.
McIlroy instantly surrendered his overnight two-shot advantage on his first hole on Sunday, before battling back to the top and then blowing a four-shot lead standing on the 11th tee.
Excruciatingly for fans, the 35-year-old endured a missed putt for par on the 72nd hole but finally birdied the first playoff hole for the win.
McIlroy collapsed to the floor in tears at taking home the prestigious Green Jacket and joining the elitest of golf’s elite.
Only Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen, Jack Nicklaus and McIlroy’s idol, Tiger Woods, had achieved the career Grand Slam.
Golf’s relentless schedule means tournaments are already taking place this weekend, but when will the Masters champion be involved?
McIlroy opted not to compete at RBC Heritage after Augusta, but his return date has already been confirmed.
When will McIlroy return to action?
McIlroy has already announced that he will reunite with Shane Lowry to defend their title at the PGA Tour‘s Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
The duo, who claimed a playoff victory over Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer last year, will be in Louisiana on Thursday, April 24.
McIlroy has claimed an elusive fifth majorRory McIlroy upcoming schedule
Tournaments for which McIlroy has formerly committed:
April 24: Zurich Classic of New Orleans (TPC Louisiana) May 7: Truist Championship (Philadelphia Cricket Club) May 15: PGA Championship (Quail Hollow) June 12: US Open (Oakmont) July 17: The Open (Royal Portrush) September 4: Irish Open (The K Club) September 11: BMW PGA Championship (Wentworth)“We’ll be there,” Lowry told Golfweek.
“I talked to him [Wednesday] morning. We’re good to go.
“To be honest, I didn’t want him to feel like he had to play because of me.
“He’s not letting me down if he wanted to take some time. He feels like he wants to get back out there.”
McIlroy finally banishing his Augusta woes will likely aid him in using a springboard to continued success with the pressure now off.
He played 27 events last year, his highest number of tournaments since 2010, but has already confirmed he will reduce his schedule.
He will play alongside Lowry in Louisiana for a shot at another titleGetty“l will probably play, including the Ryder Cup, something like 22,” McIlroy said earlier this year. “I’d say my DP World Tour schedule will be pretty similar to what it was last year.
“Obviously, we don’t have the extra event here in Dubai this year, but I’d imagine that my schedule after the summer will look very much the same. If anything, I’ll play a similar schedule here [DP World Tour] and just shave off some events over in the States.”
McIlroy will relish the remaining majors this summer.
The PGA Championship is taking place at Quail Hollow, where McIlroy has won multiple times in the past, while The Open is being held at Royal Portrush in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
The Ryder Cup then takes place at Bethpage Black in New York in September.
McIlroy has previously stated that winning the team event away from home is the hardest achievement in golf, and he’ll be determined to spearhead Europe’s charge in Farmingdale.
