ANTIOCH — The Antioch Unified School District Board will soon have student representation in an effort to strengthen the connection between students and the district.
The board unanimously agreed Wednesday night to revise a bylaw that will allow students to provide input on board matters and share their perspectives. Starting with the 2025/26 school year, the board aims to seat three students.

Hernandez said the board wanted to start including student board members during the new school year because there are only three meetings left for the current year.
“I think we know from our own experience becoming board members that it takes a long time to learn and feel comfortable,” said Hernandez. “I think this gives us the best chance to really start off with the whole school year and then some additional lead time to do some prep for those students.”
Under the revised bylaw, the school district each year will rotate which school will have a student board representative, and the respective schools will conduct an election for the position among their student body. The elections for the student board members must be conducted by May 30 of the school year.
The student board members, once elected, will hear the views of the public, establish and maintain relationships with other board members and the district superintendent, work with the district and board to set policies and goals, and provide students’ voices in funding priorities.
It will also include representing their fellow students in the district and communicating regularly with student councils or student leadership at the high schools, as well as sharing their concerns and feedback with the board.
They will also be allowed to cast “preferential votes” on all matters except those in closed session meetings. Preferential votes are when a student board member’s opinion is recorded in the meeting minutes and cast before the official vote of the school board. However, preferential votes do not affect final vote counts.
