Freezing-cold Patrick Mahomes draft grades prove NFL experts are terrible at predicting future ...Middle East

Patrick Mahomes wasn’t always destined for greatness.

In 2017, the future three-time Super Bowl winner was seen as a top-ten pick, at best, in the NFL Draft.

Mahomes was a three-star QB and the 50th ranked player in the state of Texas coming out of high school.

Mahomes threw for over 5,000 yards and completed almost 66 percent of his passes in college while entertaining a career in baseball.

But his team lost a lot (he went 13-19 at Texas Tech) and scouts had their doubts about the budding signal caller’s potential.

His accuracy issues (he threw 29 interceptions in three seasons at Texas) and inconsistent footwork were two major concerns among experts.

Although undeniably talented, there were serious question marks over Mahomes’ ability to adapt to the pros and lead an NFL offense.

As a result, he was seen as a first rounder in the draft rather than an automatic top three pick.

After watching the Bears take Mitch Trubisky with the second overall pick and the Bengals select the former fastest NFL player ever at No. 9, the Chiefs traded with the Buffalo Bills to grab Mahomes at No. 10.

Kansas City traded their 2017 first-round pick and third-round pick, and their 2018 first-round pick to the Bills to move up for Mahomes at ten.

The reactions were mixed to say the least.

NFL writer Steven Ruiz of The Ringer gave the Mahomes pick a C- grade in a now infamous draft grade score.

“Calling Mahomes a project is a major understatement,” Ruiz wrote.

“He’s nowhere near ready to play in the NFL. And, honestly, he may never be. Between his inconsistent accuracy due to poor mechanics, his tendency to bail from clean pockets and his lack of field vision, he’s going to leave as many big plays on the field as he creates. This was a risky pick.”

The impossibly wide-of-the-mark summary has resurfaced several times throughout the years with fans all saying the same thing.

“Does this dude still have a job?” one fan posted.

“Bottom line, don’t take these analysts at everything they say. They’re not omniscient. They’re fallible and their messups, unlike yours and mine, are very public,” another added.

“They said he might never be ready to play in the NFL [skull emoji],” a third joked.

“Just goes to show you NO ONE knows what these guys might become,” a fourth wrote.

To be fair to that writer, he wasn’t the only expert unsure of Mahomes’ ceiling.

SB Nation’s Dan Kadar gave the Mahomes selection a C grade, writing: “My grade on what Kansas City did in this draft is due to my opinion that they gave up way too much to trade up for quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the first round.

“Again, if he works out, I look dumb and it doesn’t matter. But to give up pick Nos. 27 and 91 this year and a first-round pick in 2018 is a lot.

“The Chiefs are a team that I think could have used this draft to find a player in the first round who can push them over the top in 2017 and help them make a Super Bowl push.”

Danny Kelly of The Ringer also thought Mahomes was a C grade selection.

“The Chiefs just got the heir apparent to Alex Smith, but in many ways, Mahomes is Smith’s polar opposite: The son of a former MLB pitcher, he has an incredible arm, and he’s never been afraid to use it.

“But unlike Smith, Mahomes lacks discipline and consistency both when it comes to playing within the constructs of the offense and with his accuracy and decision-making.

“Andy Reid has a project on his hands, and it will take some time for Mahomes to acclimate and adapt to Reid’s West Coast offense, but the former Red Raider is going to a team with plenty of playmakers, including Jeremy Maclin, Travis Kelce, and Tyreek Hill.

“It’s a high-risk, high-reward move for the Chiefs, who gave up this year’s 27th pick, another third-rounder this year, and a first-rounder next year to move up to this spot.”

Mahomes would ultimately prove the doubters wrong.

At the age of 29 he’s already well on his way to the Hall of Fame with three Super Bowl rings, three Super Bowl MVPs, two regular season MVPs and six Pro Bowl nods.

He also has a career completion percentage of 66.6 and has thrown for 32,352 yards and 245 touchdowns.

Mahomes also has 2,243 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns -not bad for a player deemed to be a C- selection on draft night.

With that said, last season was a disappointing one for both Showtime and his Chiefs.

KC were chasing an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat, having become the first team since Tom Brady‘s 2004 New England Patriots to go back-to-back as world champs.

The Chiefs started 9–0 for the first time since 2013 and finished the regular season 15-2, good enough for the AFC’s No.1 seed.

They rolled past the Texans and Bills in the playoffs to advance to their third straight Super Bowl.

However, they massively came unstuck against Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles, losing 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX.
