HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Huntington Beach baseball team appeared at times to be coasting through the early innings of its Sunset League game against Los Alamitos on Friday at Huntington Beach High School.
And then, seemingly at will, the Oilers, who are ranked No. 1 in Orange County, decided it was time to create some separation between themselves and the No. 4-ranked Griffins, and that is exactly what they did.
Huntington Beach broke open a close game with three late-inning home runs, including a two-run shot from University of San Diego signee Jayton Greer, and remained undefeated in league play with a 7-2 victory.
Greer added a single, a double and had four RBIs as the Oilers (18-2, 11-0) swept the three-game series with the Griffins (15-7-2, 8-7).
“From our perspective as a coaching staff, I still don’t think we’ve played our best baseball,” Oilers coach Benji Medure said. “I still think there are things that we’re not doing as well as I’ve seen us do in the past.”
The Oilers used three pitchers.
Starter Tyler Bellerose allowed two runs and four hits over three innings. Jake Frohn allowed two hits with three strikeouts and didn’t allow a run through his three innings, and Freddie Angiuli pitched the seventh.
Of the seven Sunset League teams, the Oilers have allowed the fewest runs by far, giving up 17 runs through 11 league games and 41 runs through all 20 games.
Using two or more pitchers in a game is a strategy Medure has employed throughout the season.
“They are by committee, and you know, there isn’t one absolute stud,” Medure said. “There’s a bunch of really, really good pitchers who take pride in what they do, and they push each other. It’s fun to watch them at practice. And they love each other and then they push so I think that’s a big part of our team success.”
In the first inning, Greer doubled in C.J. Weinstein and Ethan Porter to give the Oilers a 2-0 lead.
The Griffins tied the score on an RBI double from Rowan Shelley in the second and a run-scoring single from Wyatt Joyce in the third.
Huntington Beach led 3-2 in the fifth when Greer’s two-run home run made it 5-2.
Trevor Goldenetz and Weinstein opened the sixth with back-to-back home runs to put the game away for the Oilers.
Keeping at-bats simple has been a key to the Oilers’ success at the plate this season, Greer said.
“We thought being the most simple would get the best results and it did,” Greer said. “So, we went one pitch at a time and hit the ball hard somewhere.”
The Oilers and second-place Newport Harbor (17-5, 9-3), face off in an important three-game series (April 22, 23 and 25) that will likely determine the Sunset League champion.
