Bruce Pearl comments on Auburn transfer guard Kevin Overton ...Middle East

Auburn officially announced the signing of Kevin Overton on Friday.

Alongside a collection of highlights from his time at Texas Tech, the Tigers called Overton an “elite” guard. Coach Bruce Pearl had a different word to describe the newest member of the Auburn backcourt: winner.

“Kevin Overton is a winner,” Pearl said in a statement. “He has been a part of two great teams at Drake and Texas Tech with two outstanding coaching staffs. The way he plays flat-out impacts winning. He has always been known as a tough, physical defender and a 3 and D guy. Kevin will have the opportunity to expand his game at Auburn. Graduating Denver Jones, Miles Kelly, and Chris Moore, we needed a veteran leader to call our young backcourt. The character, toughness, and work ethic that Kevin brings will add to our culture and rebuild our roster.”

Overton is a 6-foot-5 combo guard who spent 1 season at Drake and a second at Texas Tech. He was an All-Freshman selection in his lone season in the Missouri Valley Conference and then averaged 22 minutes off the bench for the Red Raiders last season.

On a per-40 basis, Overton has averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists across his 2-year collegiate career. He’s a 43.2% shooter from the field and a 34.0% shooter from beyond the 3-point line.

Overton is 1 of 8 new players making their way to Auburn this offseason. The Tigers have now signed 5 freshmen in a class that ranks 14th nationally. Overton is the third transfer pledge, joining former Mississippi State forward KeShawn Murphy and former UCF wing Keyshawn Hall.

Auburn is looking to reload after an SEC regular-season title and Final Four appearance this past season, and in pursuit of that goal, Pearl has balanced this incoming class well, with young prospects and immediate contributors who can guide the youngsters.

Remove the COVID-altered 2020-21 season, and Auburn has won at least 25 games in 6 of the last 7 seasons. The Tigers have made the national semifinals in the NCAA Tournament twice under Pearl, but they are still seeking their first national championship appearance.
