The Syrian and Jordanian foreign ministries issued a joint statement following the visit of Jordan’s Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, to Damascus on Thursday, April 17.

According to the statement, a Higher Coordination Council has been agreed upon, which will include multiple sectors such as energy, health, industry, trade, transport, agriculture, water, information technology, communications, education, and tourism. The council is set to hold its first meetings in the coming weeks.

For his part, Safadi affirmed Jordan’s full support for Syria in the reconstruction process through a Syrian-Syrian process that includes all segments of the Syrian people based on principles that ensure Syria’s unity, security, stability, and sovereignty, freeing it from terrorism, and preserving the rights of Syrians after years of oppression, injustice, and destruction.

Syrian Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shibani, emphasized the interconnectedness of stability between the two countries, Syria’s commitment to Jordan’s security, refusal to jeopardize its safety, and the enhancement of cooperation in security fields, including combating the Islamic State group and terrorism in all its forms, as well as fighting drug and arms smuggling.

Safadi praised the efforts of the Syrian government to combat drug smuggling and stressed the need to stop ongoing Israeli attacks on Syria and the occupation of part of its territories, considering it a blatant violation of international law and a clear infringement of the disengagement agreement between Syria and Israel established in 1974, a provocation that leads to further tension and conflict in the region.

The two sides also discussed the necessary steps to activate the outcomes of the “Syria and Neighboring Countries” conference to combat the Islamic State, which was hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom on March 9.

Message from the Jordanian King

The two ministers expressed their satisfaction with the continuous growth in trade exchange between the two countries and agreed to continue coordination and activate communication between the relevant ministries and institutions in both countries in the coming period to take necessary steps to enhance cooperation.

On Thursday, Safadi visited Damascus and met with his Syrian counterpart, Asaad al-Shibani. He also conducted discussions with President Ahmed al-Sharaa and conveyed a verbal message from the Jordanian king, confirming the commitment to strengthening fraternal relations between the two countries and Jordan’s support for Syria, its security, stability, and cooperation in the reconstruction process.

For his part, the Syrian president affirmed the depth of the relationship between the two countries, stressing Syria’s desire to develop relations with Jordan in all fields.

This visit comes amid ongoing diplomatic activity between Damascus and Amman, as this marks Safadi’s second visit since the fall of the ousted Bashar al-Assad regime.

Safadi visited Damascus on December 23, 2024, where he held discussions with Syrian officials. Following that, he made a series of calls to brief the foreign ministers of Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Bahrain, and Turkey on the discussions.

The Syrian president visited Jordan on February 26, where he held discussions with his counterpart, King Abdullah II, who affirmed his country’s support for Syria in the reconstruction process, ensuring involvement from the Syrian people across all components to guarantee Syria’s unity, security, and stability.
