Soccer stadium will spotlight South Broadway’s charms
Re: “NWSL stadium: Denver to kick in up to $70M,” April 10 news story
South Broadway has plenty going for it. You can go antiquing in the day and hit the bars at night. Pizza comes by the slice when you need it most, which is, of course, whenever you decide you need pizza. We have momentum, but what we don’t have is a hub.
That changes with the announcement that a professional women’s soccer stadium is coming to Denver. Finally, South Broadway has its HQ. Along South Broadway, empanadas take their rightful place alongside donut shops. But like other areas, we’re still recovering from the pandemic. It’s more expensive to launch a business here than it is in Englewood, and a packed house is anything but a given.
South Broadway needs what the Ballpark neighborhood has: a place for young and old, for families, something that attracts people from surrounding neighborhoods and from throughout the region. The Rockies sometimes struggle, but the gameday experience is special, and that magnet helps LoDo thrive.
Denver NWSL can do the same for South Broadway with this park and stadium at Santa Fe Yards. We’re thrilled the team is spending its own money on a stadium. But we do expect the city to invest to get this right too, and ensure the site is connected to the surrounding area for a year-round attraction.
Now is the time to put our money where our mouth is and invest in the businesses that represent our city. After all, South Broadway is Denver. And Denver is ready for soccer.

We can’t cherry-pick words from the Second Amendment
Re: “Gun restrictions: Weld County sheriff opposes it, but will comply with legislation,” April 17 news story
Jason Maxey, Weld County commissioner, complained about the recent gun control law, Senate Bill 3, “I don’t understand how some representatives down there do not understand the words ‘shall not be infringed.’ ” I don’t understand how Mr. Maxey and others don’t understand the first part of that Second Amendment sentence: “A well-regulated Militia.” And the authors of that sentence were thinking muskets, not automatic and semi-automatic weapons.
We need sensible regulations like those that are now Colorado law to protect innocent victims from gun violence, which Colorado has seen a lot of in the past couple of decades.

An appeal to Republican lawmakers to push back on Trump
The Republicans are erasing America’s values! Will this only stop when we are a totally white, impoverished nation held hostage to corrupt, powerful leaders?
Resistance is alive and well — thank you, universities, non-profit advocates and local governments. But who can act the quickest to stop this harm? The Republican party can pull their heads out of Donald Trump’s pot of golden bribes and say No! This is not the American way!

I always thought there were three branches of government. However, it appears that the legislative branch has just combined with the executive, going along with whatever our cruel, picky and dangerous president comes up with.
Come on, Republicans. It’s time you showed your concern for our democratic nation instead of being silent when the “wannabe” dictator in the White House makes all these very disturbing executive orders. I hope many of you are finally getting ashamed and ready to speak up and take away some of that power he has grabbed. I’m scared, please get some courage, become visible and speak up!
