The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s headquarters in Mirpur recently faced a raid by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) due to allegations of corruption. A three-member ACC team visited the BCB office on Tuesday around 12 PM to investigate complaints about corruption in selecting teams for various cricket leagues, including the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

What exactly happened during the raid?

On Tuesday around 12 PM, a special three-member team from the ACC arrived at the BCB headquarters in Mirpur. The raid was conducted in response to complaints about corruption in the selection process for various cricket leagues overseen by the BCB.

ACC official Mahmudul Hasan said during the media briefing, “We came here today from the ACC’s head office to conduct an enforcement operation. The main issue of the complaint was corruption in the selection process of various cricket leagues under the Bangladesh Cricket Board. This enforcement operation is being conducted based on allegations of illegal transactions and various other irregularities,”

Allegations and investigation

The ACC is investigating allegations of illegal transactions and irregularities, particularly focusing on the 2023 team selection for the Third Division Qualifying round. Previously, the application fee for participating teams was Taka 5 lakh, with only a few teams applying.

This year, after reducing the fee to Taka 1 lakh, 60 teams applied, raising suspicions. Hasan added, “We have collected the documents and will now verify and investigate these matters.”

Ticket sales concerns

Besides team selection, there are accusations related to corruption in ticket sales during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Reports indicate discrepancies in ticket sales revenue. From the 3rd to the 10th season of the BPL, the BCB reported ticket sales revenue of 15 crore taka. However, in the 11th season, when BCB managed ticket sales themselves, the reported revenue was only 13 crore taka, raising questions about the figures.

The ACC’s investigation into these matters is still ongoing, and further findings will contribute to understanding the extent of alleged corruption within the BCB.
