Photos of the home where Gene Hackman and wife Betsy Arakawa’s dead bodies were found in February, and the images, released by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, reveal the main house was messy while the outbuildings were rodent-infested.
Footage and photos show the couple’s Santa Fe, New Mexico, home had overflowing trash cans as well as piles of clothing and other clutter at the time of their deaths.
Hackman and Arakawa were found dead at ages 95 and 65, respectively, on February 26. Hackman’s official cause of death was hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributing factor. Authorities believe he died on February 18 while Arakawa likely died on February 12.
Her official cause of death is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which is a rare, airborne infectious disease from rodent urine, droppings or saliva.
What to Know About Gene Hackman, Wife Betsy’s Deaths
The New Mexico Department of Health conducted a risk assessment on the couple’s property on March 5 for the safety of first responders and others who had accessed the estate. While the main house on the $4 million property was not infested, the Department of Health reported dead rodents and rodent nests within eight detached outbuildings (three garages, two casitas and three sheds) on Hackman and Arakawa’s estate.

The footage was released per a judge’s instructions. Typically, images like this are considered public record. However, Yoshie Feaster, Arakawa’s mother, wanted to keep graphic photos private.
“I humbly come before this court to request that this court respect my right to grieve in peace and find that I have a constitutional right to avoid seeing images of my daughter’s home, her dead body, her husband’s dead body, and their dog’s corpse,” Feaster, 91, said in court documents obtained by People on March 31. “The public spectacle surrounding my daughter’s death is one that no parent should have to live through.”

She added, “No reasonable person could avoid seeing or hearing these images and videos. Undoubtedly, I would be forced to relive and face my daughter’s last few days, a countless number of times. Society should respect not only its dead, but the family who are left behind to grieve their lost loved one.”
Santa Fe County SheriffJudge Matthew Wilson ultimately decided that while photos of Hackman and Arakawa’s bodies must be censored, photos of the scene and their dead dog Zinnia were not to be concealed.
Hackman and Arakawa were reportedly laid to rest at a private memorial in Santa Fe earlier this month.
